Hyderabad, January , 2019 : FACTS Foundation, a non-profit organisation of Cardiologists and Cardiac Surgeons, committed to newer research, innovation, education and training, hosted a two days conference, FCCC (Facts Cardiovascular Research Foundation Cardiology Clinics) ‘Cardiac Insights’ on the latest advances in Cardiology and Cardiothoracic surgery, at Hyderabad on January 12th and 13th, 2019. The prestigious ‘Heart Valve Therapy Symposium’ hosted in association with the Columbia Hospitals, held on 13th evening, was also part of the Conference. The Conference was attended by over 300 cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, from across the country and over 50 senior faculty, including 5 renowned specialists from abroad.
FACTS Foundation & Columbia Hospitals, US, to establish internationally acclaimed Columbia Hospital’s ‘Heart Valve Therapy Program
The Conference served as a platform for a major initiative in Heart Valve care. The collaboration betweenFACTS Foundation and Columbia Hospitals, US, will bring the internationally acclaimed Columbia Hospitals’ ‘Heart Valve Therapy Program‘, within the access of patients here, by establishing it at theApollo Health City, Hyderabad. This Program will enable performing of advanced heart valve related protocols like the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement procedure, here.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive percutaneous sutureless technique, performed to replace the diseased aortic valve, also known as aortic stenosis, which happens due to narrowing of the valve. The Aortic valve connects the left ventricle – the blood pumping chamber at the bottom of the heart and the Aorta – the largest artery of the body which carries the oxygenated blood to the body. The narrowing of this valve happens over years of degeneration with aging and also by birth defect. Its malfunction will result in reverse flow of the blood. Aortic valve stenosis can also lead to heart failure ultimately.
Aortic valve replacement has been conventionally done by performing a surgery, which involves high risk for the patient, besides needing a prolonged bed rest for recovery. The novel procedure, TAVR is patient friendly with excellent results and the patient can recover within two days. Being a minimally invasive procedure, it is done through a small aperture in the groin, with administering of anaesthesia for a limited period. Besides the regular patients, this procedure is a big boon for those in advanced age, those with high risk of surgery and associated complications like lung or kidney disease. Such patients hitherto had to endure the suffering without a treatment and TAVR provides them solace.
However, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement procedure, needs high expertise. Only cardiologists’ trained and proficient in it with experienced medical and para-medical support and state-of-the-art technology, can produce good outcomes from TAVR, says Dr A. Sreenivas Kumar.
Taking a cue from this, the FACTS Foundation and Columbia Hospitals now decided to work together by establishing a State of the Art ‘Heart Valve Therapy Program” at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad. The Centre will initially have Columbia Heart Valve therapy experts like Dr. Kodali, Dr. Amisha and others, available as and when required for performing these complicated procedures at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. This development will enable patients to seek the world-class TAVR care here, without the need to travel to US, thus rescuing several critical patients from imminent heart failure and that at a much lesser cost than they would incur in USA. Patients with grave valve problems can now seek the world’s best Heart Valve Therapy at a fraction of the cost, here in Hyderabad, says Dr A. Sreenivas Kumar.
Dr A. Sreenivas Kumar, Founder Director, FACTS Foundation and Sr. Consultant Cardiologist, Director Cardiology and Clinical Research Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad, under whose aegis the Conference was held;Dr Susheel K. Kodali, Director, Columbia Heart Valve Therapy, NewYork; Dr. Juan Grenada, CEO, Cardiovascular Research Foundation, NewYork; Dr Ajay Kirtane, Director, Cardiac Cath Lab, Newyork Presbyeterian Hospital and Dr Gokul Reddy, Cardiologist; briefed media about the Heart Valve Therapy Program and the latest advances in the field of Cardiology, deliberated at the Conference.
Some of the advanced procedures deliberated at the Conference included, Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), Pharmacology for Interventionists, Antiplatelet therapy, Evolution of Drug Eluting Stents, How FFR and IVUS/OCT optimize patient outcomes, Perforations – a nightmare, how to prevent & manage, MitraClip, Transseptal Technique etc. But the most exciting procedure the delegates focused on was TAVR.
